Its what your skin prefers!
People have been taking care of their skin for centuries. Before our commercialisation of everything, natural herbal skin care was traditionally used.
Unfortunately these traditional methods have been replaced by skin care products which have as their base, chemical and synthetic ingredients. Many people have lost touch with natural ways of living and probably don’t even realise that originally herbs were used in skin care recipes.
Over time convenience and shelf life became important factors in the production of skin care products, so preservatives and additives became the norm in the production of these and almost everything else.
As time has gone by, many people are becoming more aware of the side effects of these preservatives and additives and are choosing to return to the natural way.
As it is time consuming to make these natural products at home, a lot of herbal skin care products have been marketed as natural, even though they contain other ingredients.
Here are some of the herbs used today in herbal skin care products:
Aloe Vera, from the Aloe plant, is an amazing healer of burns, wounds, abrasions and is a great soother of dry skins.
Some herbs have cleansing properties and when made into teas are very effective. These include Dandelion, Chamomile, Lime Flowers and Rosemary.
Lavender, Marigold, Thyme and Fennel can be used for their antiseptic properties, with Lavender water and Rose water as toners for the skin.
In some instances certain herbs that have been extracted into teas are used as a treatment for UV radiation damaged skin (sunburn).
Another very popular and widely used aspect of herbs is their extraction into oils. Examples of these are Tea tree oil, Lavender oil, and Primrose oil. Fruit oils (from banana, apple and melon) are used for their hydrating properties in shower gels. Aromatherapy oils and homeopathic products are also used in natural herbal skin care.
Many skin problems can be helped with herbal skin care as well as for just the normal skin regime. Some of the more well know skin disorders that have been helped are eczema and psoriasis.
The most important reason for using herbal skin care is that it is safer than the commercial products because of the side effects, be they short or long term and it is fairly simple to make these products at home. In certain instances depending on the skin issue/disorder, it may be necessary to use a synthetic product which your doctor or dermatologist may recommend.
